Experience Aboriginal history and culture at Camp Coorong, in southern Australia, a welcoming environment where people can talk openly, share diverse experiences, compare stories, and come to understand the true history of Australia’s Indigenous people. Enjoy accommodations in self contained cabins and activities like bush walking, and field trips to Ngarrindjeri sites and national parks that take you through a tour of the land and its ecology. Basket weaving, a museum tour, and an Ngarrindjeri Elder cultural and history lecture all help to increase cultural awareness and respect.
Camp Coorong, an area of about 250 acres near Meningie in the South East of South Australia, was established in 1986 with the aim to share Aboriginal history and culture with non-Aboriginal people. People of all walks of life have spent time at Camp Coorong, many non-Aboriginal people, young people in schools, environmental organisations and various government and community groups. George, Tom and Ellen Trevorrow have together created a welcoming environment, one where people can talk openly, share their diverse experiences, compare stories and come to understand the true Australian history of Indigenous people. The visitors all experience the land and its ecology, and take awa new understandings through finding out about Dreaming stories, medicine plants, Ngarrindjeri law, hunting and gathering food, and the day to day lifestyle of the Ngarrindjeri Aboriginal people.
There is no doubt that the experiences at Camp Coorong change people’s lives. Their gentle approach in cultural awareness has enabled non-Aboriginal people to recognise the responsibilities of today without shame or guilt and move forward to correct what has happened in the past. In a practical way, Camp Coorong has opened communication between many Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people and helped remove barriers towards meaningful Reconciliation.
Primarily Camp Coorong is dedicated to the cross-cultural education process whereby all Australian and international guests are introduced to Ngarrindjeri cultural practices and beliefs past and present. Camp Coorong serves as a locus of Ngarrindjeri nation governance and provides a strong sense of nation state representation through being the base for Ngarrindjeri Land & Progress Association.
